*Announcing New Faculty Positions in the University of North Carolina -
North Carolina State University Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering*

The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of
North Carolina and North Carolina State University is seeking highly
qualified candidates at all levels for tenure-track faculty positions.
Applicants are expected to have earned doctoral degrees in biomedical
engineering or related sciences. Post-doctoral research and teaching
experience are highly desirable. Successful candidates will be expected
to develop self-sustaining, extramurally funded, internationally
acclaimed research programs and demonstrate a clear commitment to both
our undergraduate and graduate academic programs. Areas of particular
interest are tissue engineering, bionanotechnology, biomedical imaging,
biomechanics, bioelectronics, bioMEMS, biorobotics, computational
neuroscience, and medical devices.

Our biomedical engineering graduate program has a 38-year history at UNC
Chapel Hill. In 2003, our graduate program was expanded to include NC
State and the Joint Department was created. The department offers an
ABET-accredited bachelors degree at NC State and supports a biomedical
engineering emphasis in UNCís applied-science bachelorís degree. A new
state-of-the-art building will soon be under construction on the
Centennial Campus at NC State that will house biomedical and mechanical
engineering. At UNC, the department is scheduled to move into renovated
space in Spring 2008. Research strengths include materials science,
tissue engineering, bioinformatics, cell and molecular biology, bioMEMS,
microfluidics, biomedical instrumentation, neurosciences, biomedical
imaging, cardiovascular applications, medical textiles, and
mechanobiology. Collaborations between the NC State and UNC Chapel Hill
campuses foster a highly collegial atmosphere that results in extremely
successful multidisciplinary research projects. Entrepreneurial activity
and the commercialization of intellectual property by our faculty are
encouraged and are a positive factor in performance evaluations. For
