1. Position Summary
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Melbourne is
seeking to appoint an academic staff member in the general area of dynamic
systems and control with an emphasis on biomechanics. Applicants with
experience in solid mechanics, including continuum mechanics and finite
element analysis, are also encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant is expected to build an independent and
well-funded research program. Active collaboration with other research
groups in the Department and the Faculty of Engineering is encouraged. The
Department has a large biomechanics group which undertakes experimental
and computational research into human motion. The Department also has
substantial links with the Systems Engineering Group in the Department of
Electrical Engineering, including a large collaborative research project
undertaken through National ICT Australia involving the application of
advanced medical imaging in human movement biomechanics. The Department
also partners with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in the
National Health and Medical Research Council Centre of Clinical Research
Excellence in Gait Analysis and Rehabilitation.

2. Selection Criteria
A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of engineering is required. The
appointee should have a track record of demonstrable scholarly and
professional achievement in the areas of dynamic systems and control
and/or solid mechanics with an emphasis on biomechanics. The appointee
will also be expected to teach and develop courses in one or more of the
above areas. Excellent written and oral communication skills and good
interpersonal skills are essential.
