I think Ton's analysis of the situation and proposal for research is on
target, including his analogy with wheelchair athletes in marathons. I like
his suggestion to compare power output at hip and knee in amputee vs hip,
knee, and ankle in able-bodied. Makes me wonder about the role of toe
plantarflexion in able-bodied sprinters, who run significantly on their
toes. Power at the ankle may not capture the contribution from toe plantar
flexors. Is it necessary also to compute power at the "metatarsal joint" in
the able-bodied, in order to have a fair comparison with amputee?
