View Full Version : Two engineering positions available at K.U.Leuven, Belgium

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, in cooperation with the
Laboratory for Clinical Motion Analysis, and the Department of
Rehabilitation Sciences, of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
(K.U.Leuven), Belgium has the following vacancies, starting Autumn 2007,
for the development of an "Integrated Platform for Clinical Spasticity

1 Postdoc Biomechanics/Biomedical Engineering (24 months)
1 Mechatronics Engineer (24 months)

The engineers work in a two-year project to develop the hardware and
software for the integrated platform for clinical spasticicy assessment. The
goal is to develop an instrument with which clinicians can quantify the
spasticity of (mostly) young patients, based on multi-level force, motion
and EMG measurements on the patients' leg.

This project runs in cooperation with the University Hospitals of the
K.U.Leuven and with the Children's Hospital of the University of Brussels,
so very regular interaction with the responsible clinicians and medical
doctors will be required.

The required expertise is as follows:
- the Postdoc will lead the overall project, and be responsible for the
mechatronic design of the instrument (hardware, signal processing,
control and acquisition software), for the appropriate integration of all
developments, and for the optimal communication between clinicians and
- the engineer focuses on the signal processing aspects (linear
filter theory, Bayesian networks, ...), both EMG and 3D gait analysis
data, and helps in the production of the instruments.
For all positions, familiarity with mechatronic design, systems and
control theory, embedded software development and gait analysis is a plus.
