ACL Research Retreat, IV
ACL INJURIES: THE GENDER BIAS

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT & CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Hosted by
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Department of Exercise and Sport Science

April 3 rd - 5th, 2008
Greensboro Marriott Downtown
304 N Greene Street
Greensboro NC
(336) 379-8000

ONGOING MISSION:
It has been well recognized that female athletes are at significantly
greater risk of injuring their ACL compared to their male counterparts.
The reasons for this difference are not entirely clear. However, there
are a number of directions currently being investigated including causes
related to structural, biomechanical, neuromuscular, and hormonal factors.
This is the fourth research retreat on this topic. The first 3 Retreats
(2001, 2003 and 2006) were held in Lexington, KY and chaired by
co-founders Mary Lloyd Ireland, MD and Irene Davis PhD, PT, The purpose of
the Retreat is to examine the factors thought to be associated with the
gender bias in ACL injuries. In the past, this retreat has attracted some
of the foremost national and international scientists involved in this
area of research. We look forward to hosting the 2008 Retreat in
Greensboro, North Carolina to update attendees on ongoing research in the
area and to discuss new research directives aimed at understanding the
gender bias in the incidence of ACL injuries. It is anticipated that the
information presented will make a valuable contribution to the existing
body of literature and continue to strengthen the foundation upon which
quality research and clinical interventions can be advanced.

FORMAT:
The format will feature presentations by well known experts in the field
and 15-minute podium presentations of research relating to gender bias in
ACL injuries. Significant time will be provided for group discussion
following each keynote and each group of podium presentations. At the
conclusion of the meeting our goal will be to revisit and update the
consensus statement from the 2006 research retreat based on progress in
the field.
