View Full Version : Vacancy - PhD student - finite element modeling of cartilagetissue engineering

10-20-2007, 05:30 AM

PhD Student on finite element modeling of the development of tissue engineered cartilage, in project "Computer-aided tissue engineering of articular cartilage".

Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), Section Orthopedic Biomechanics of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), The Netherlands.

Repair strategies for treatment of articular cartilage damage (osteoarthritis) are so far insufficient. Currently the most promising method is to replace damaged tissue by newly generated, tissue engineered cartilage. Although there is significant progression in the area of cartilage tissue engineering, implants still have insufficient mechanical properties to withstand the severe loading conditions in the joint.

We have developed a theory for how to improve the mechanical quality of tissue engineered cartilage implants during ex vivo culture. The objective of this project is to employ this theory in order to develop a mechanically superior tissue engineered cartilage.

To reach that aim requires the collaboration of two PhD students: one to perform the tissue engineering experiments and one to perform computational analyses in support of the experiments. This includes the further development our finite element models (Abaqus software) on cartilage mechanics and cartilage development.

The former PhD project will start Feb 2008. The position for the student who performs the computational analyses is vacant.
