Position Announcement

Biomechanical Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Columbia University

Center for Orthopaedic Research

The Biomechanics Laboratory, a part of the Center for Orthopaedic Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, is currently accepting applications for a post-doctoral research fellow. The laboratory maintains MTS servohydraulic and Instron electomechanical material testing frames, dissection and microscopy equipment, tissue culture facilities, desk space for fellows, students and staff, and general wet lab space for specialized experiments. The primary research interests within the laboratory are in orthopaedic biomechanics related to joint function, disease, injury and repair.

The position involves the design and implementation of biomechanical experiments working in close collaboration with orthopaedic attendings, fellows, residents and biomechanical engineers and engineering students in the fields of diarthrodial joint function, soft tissue mechanics, trauma and arthroplasty. Experience with uniaxial and biaxial load frames is desired. Candidates should be able to work both independently and as a member of a team; from data collection to manuscript preparation; maintaining lab equipment and dissection facilities as well as working with custom-made experimental equipment, computers, animal and cadaver tissue and performing data and statistical analyses.

- Ph.D. or equivalent in biomedical or mechanical engineering is required.

- Previous laboratory experience in science and/or engineering is highly desirable.

- The interested candidate must have good analytical and writing skills.

- Knowledge of Matlab, C++, or Fortran is required.

- Ability to perform stress-strain analysis using FEA (ABAQUS) would be a plus.

- Knowledge of machine shop fabrication, and electronic circuits would also be a plus.
