View Full Version : "preferred speed" overground versus on treadmill

10-31-2007, 07:12 PM
Dear all,

our experience is that people tend to select a slower speed when walking on
a treadmill than overground. Consistently with this, when the treadmill is
run at the self-selected overground speed, subjects perceive the speed as
too fast. Does anybody know of a systematic study of this? It would be great
to have a (validated) rule of thumb how to determine preferred treadmill
speed from overground walking (75%, 90%, ...?).

Thanks for your help,
