Application of nanoindentation techniques to investigate the
properties of pathological bone

Joint Research Institute: Mechanics of Materials & Structures and

Universities of Glasgow and Paisley

Under the umbrella of the JRI in the Mechanics of Materials &
Structure and Bioengineering within the Glasgow Research Partnership
in Engineering two PhD studentships are available. They will jointly
supervised by Professor Liz Tanner at the University of Glasgow and
Dr Wenzhong Zhu and Dr John Hughes at the University of Paisley and
will have access to the facilities of both Universities. One student
will be registered at each university. The projects are separate but
related being on a) the use of nanoindentation to investigate the
temporal changes in the properties of bone during bone development in
knockout mice and b) the use of nanoindentation to investigate the
changes in bone properties in a model of osteoarthritis

Professor Tannerís research is in bio-medical materials including the
mechanical properties of normal and pathological bone. Dr Zhu and Dr
Hughesí expertise is in the use of nanoindentation to investigate the
properties of hard materials including bone.


Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 or equivalent degree in
Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or
a related subject. The stipend for this PhD is currently £12600 per
year (tax free) for three and a half years and the university fees
are covered for UK and EU students.
