AREA OF INSTRUCTION: Kinesiology – Biomechanics/Motor Learning (Job # 7417)

RANK AND SALARY: Full-time tenure track Assistant Professor. Rank and
salary are dependent upon the appointee’s qualifications and experience.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Kinesiology or related
area from an accredited college or university is required at the time of
appointment. Candidates must demonstrate success in undergraduate and
graduate teaching in the areas of biomechanics, structural kinesiology,
and motor learning. Candidates should also demonstrate potential for
scholarly and creative activities in biomechanics that encourages student
participation. In addition, the candidate should have a demonstrated
interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses to diverse students
(majors, general education students, etc.). Candidates whose
qualifications also suit them to prepare individuals to function in a
culturally and ethnically diverse society are especially encouraged to
apply.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate
and/or graduate courses in biomechanics, structural kinesiology, motor
learning, as well as laboratory instruction. Other teaching assignments
will depend upon the candidate’s strengths and the programmatic needs of
the department. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional
faculty members are: teaching, conducting scholarly and creative
activities, and service (University, profession and community). These
responsibilities include: advising students, supervising graduate theses,
participating in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office
hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and
participating in traditional academic functions.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Humboldt State University is part of the 23-campus
California State University system. The University has a comprehensive
arts and sciences curriculum, which is recognized nationally for its high
academic quality. Founded in 1913, HSU is one of the premier, public
institutions in the western United States; it is a residential and rural
campus with an enrollment of approximately 7,500 students. The main campus
is located in Arcata, California, in the northwestern part of the state
along the coast, situated among redwood trees in an area that offers
unmatched scenic beauty, moderate climate and opportunities for outdoor
activities. The surrounding Humboldt County locale has a population of
130,000. The community offers an excellent range of businesses, services
and cultural activities/performances. The local schools are ranked in the
top performance percentiles, both nationally and in the state.

The Kinesiology major at Humboldt State University includes a bachelor’s
degree with options in Athletic Training Education, Exercise
Science/Health Promotion, Physical Education Teaching, or Pre-Physical
Therapy. The graduate program is a Master’s degree with options in
Exercise Science or Teaching/Coaching. There are 240 undergraduate and 30
graduate majors. The kinesiology program extensively employs experiential
education and service learning in the curriculum. In spring 2008, the
department will be moving into a new facility that includes new human
performance and biomechanics/motor learning laboratories, offices,
conference rooms, locker rooms, natatorium, dance studio, and gymnasium.
