Doctoral Candidate, Cell and Tissue Mechanics, University of Zurich, Switzerland

Position: PhD Studentship in Cell Mechanics and Tissue Engineering
Organization: University of Zurich
Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Deadline: February 31, 2008
Start: Spring/Summer 2008, or upon arrangement

This research fellowship targets the development of novel optical-mechanical techniques for the study of cell and tissue mechanics. Specific tasks involve: (1) Design and implementation of micro-devices for imparting quantified mechanical strains to skeletal tissues and cells in 3D culture; (2) Development of advanced 2D and 3D pattern recognition algorithms for tracking cells and cell substructures under mechanical stress (3) Computational modeling of cell mechanics, cell-matrix interactions, and the effects of mechanical stimuli on cell behavior.

Initial appointment will be three years. The student will be enrolled either at the University of Zurich, Department of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, or the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the ETH Zurich, as appropriate. Research is to be based in the Mechanobiology Group at the Orthopedic Research Laboratory, University of Zurich. Applications received by February 1, 2008 will receive full consideration.

Master's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, biophysics, or computer science. Extensive programming experience is prerequisite. Knowledge of finite element modeling, cell culture, or mechanical device design presents a distinct advantage.

To apply, please send your full CV, names of three references, and a cover letter to
