Graduate Study in Rehabilitation Science at San Diego State University:

The School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State
University is actively seeking highly motivated graduate students interested
in pursuing a Masters degree in the area of Rehabilitation Science.
Specific areas of on-going work include development of lower extremity
performance measures, clinical rehabilitation interventions such as
functional rehabilitation, biomechanics of running related injuries, and
motor control in clinical populations.

We anticipate that multiple opportunities for funding (RA & TA) in several
areas will be available for qualified individuals to start in Fall of 2008.
To receive priority consideration for these funded positions, all
application materials must be received no later than February 15, 2008.

San Diego State University’s School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences
a Master of Arts degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Rehabilitation
Science. The degree is a 30 unit research-based program with clinical
applications designed for the rehabilitation professional (such as physical
therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, kinesiotherapy), as well
as individuals planning to pursue a career in rehabilitation. Students can
take advanced level courses in Research Methodologies, Measurement and
Biostatistics, Biomechanics of Human Movement (Kinematics and Kinetics),
Musculoskeletal Biomechanics, Motor Control, , and Behavior Change in Sport
and Exercise. In addition to the courses offered by the School of Exercise
and Nutritional Sciences, students may take classes in other areas, such as
Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biological Sciences,
Neuroscience, or Psychology. Students will gain experience with equipment
used in 3-D Motion Analysis, Gait Analysis, Telemetric Electromyography,
Static and dynamic postural control, motor timing, etc. A background in
clinical rehabilitation training and experience (i.e., physical therapy,
occupational therapy, kinesiotherapy, athletic training) is highly desirable

Students are encouraged to contact the individual faculty member(s) they
might be interested in working with to discuss available opportunities in
individual laboratories and the compatibility of the student's research
interest with those of the faculty and program. Specifically:

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, motor timing variability in asymptomatic


Denise Wiksten, Ph.D., A.T.C.

Balance assessment and muscular performance measures, including expertise in
Isokinetic testing. Effectiveness of instructional technology in athletic
training education.

Applications for Fall 2008 admissions and financial aid are now
being accepted. The main considerations for admission to the
Rehabilitation Science Program are: (a) the course background of the
student (science courses, including Physics, Mathematics, Anatomy,
Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Control and Learning, etc.);
(b) the student's GRE scores ("verbal" scores should preferably be in
the 475 or above, and "quantitative" scores should preferably be
in the 500's or above); and
(c) the student's record of interest, experience, and academic performance.
