Dear All,

If any of your students are interested we are currently recruiting
for our Masters in Biomechanics. There are funded places for EU
students but unfortunately not for people from further afield.

biomechanicsmsc and there's a text version at the end of this
message. This is the second year the course has run and the training
it gives is particularly useful for anyone with an interest in more
comparative aspects in biomechanics since it has a significant animal
and plant component with projects ranging from tissue engineering to

The Study of Natural Engineering

Biomechanics is the area of biology that seeks to
understand the mechanical design of organisms. It is
becoming increasingly important as it underpins the
growth technologies of biomaterials, tissue engineering,
regenerative medicine, and sports science. The MSc
Biomechanics is a truly interdisciplinary course that aims to
train high quality researchers who have a broad skills
base and wide horizons.

About the Programme

There has never been a greater need for students
trained in biomechanics and the technologies it
supports, but the supply of potential researchers is
limited because there are few undergraduate
courses in this important interface between biology
and engineering. The MSc Biomechanics at The
University of Manchester has been developed to give
students with backgrounds in Life Sciences, Physical
Sciences and Engineering the broadest possible
training in this area.

You will be based in the top-rated Faculty of Life
Sciences at The University of Manchester, working as
part of its Biomechanics Group, but you will also be
taught by other members of the 20 strong North
West Biomechanics Group who are based at the
University. Members come from schools as diverse as
Medicine; Dentistry; Materials; Mechanical, Aerospace
and Civil Engineering; Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences; and Mathematics, making Manchester a
major centre for the subject. The course therefore has
the benefits of a skills base spanning all the pure and
applied aspects of Biomechanics.

Course Aims and Objectives

The aims of this course are to provide truly
interdisciplinary training in the application of
analytical, experimental and computer simulation
methods to biomechanics, both pure and applied,
and to bring students from both biological and
physical sciences backgrounds to the level at which
they undertake research at the cutting edge.

To achieve this there are three main objectives

• To provide a broad interdisciplinary introduction to
the field of comparative biomechanics and to the
technologies of tissue engineering, rehabilitation
and biomaterials.
• To develop the practical, data handling and
communication skills required to carry out
biomechanics research.
• To provide experience in devising, carrying out and
writing up research projects.

Course Content

Introduction to core concepts

Induction courses will give both life science and
physical science students the skills to tackle taught
courses covering two major areas of biomechanics:
1) the mechanics of biomaterials and biological
structures and 2) the mechanics of animal
locomotion. The courses will explain the physical
principles, be illustrated by examples covering the
whole of biodiversity, and include practicals and
problem solving exercises.

Development of advanced skills

Students will be exposed to the wide range of
biomechanical techniques and applications by active
participation in a series of practical workshops given
by experts in the field. Research skills will be further
promoted by seminars discussing recent advances in,
and the history of, biomechanics, and supported by a
course in experimental design and statistical analysis.

Research projects

Each student will undertake two full-time research
projects, of 12 and 18 weeks duration, in active
research labs. For the second research project
students are expected to develop and write a research
proposal outlining what they want to do and why.
This gives them experience of all areas of the research
process, from start to finish.

The breadth of biomechanics research in Manchester
allows us to offer students an exceptionally broad and
exciting range of options. Areas in which students
can undertake projects include the mechanics and
energetics of running, biomechanics of dinosaurs,
properties and production of biomaterials, mechanical
defences of plants, and properties of dental materials
and medical implants.

Course Structure
Section 1: Weeks 1-12
• Induction courses and workshops on experimental
design and statistics.
• Workshop series “Techniques and applications in
biomechanics”.
• Taught course "Biomaterials and Biological
Structures".
• Taught course “Mechanics of Animal Locomotion”.
• Seminars on Biomechanics.
Section 2: Weeks 13-24
• Workshop series “Techniques and applications in
biomechanics” (continued).
• First research project (12 weeks).
• Research proposal.
Section 3: Weeks 25-45
• Second research project (18 weeks).
• Preparation of thesis.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a first
or upper second class honours degree, or the
overseas equivalent, in a biological, medical or
physical sciences subject. In certain circumstances, a
lower second class honours degree supplemented
with appropriate relevant work experience may be
acceptable. For overseas applicants whose first
language is not English the minimum English
language requirement is IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 577 (paper-
based), 233 (computer-based) or 90 (internet-based).

Funding

BBSRC fully-funded or fees only studentships are
available for eligible UK/EU nationals. We also
welcome self-funding students.
