Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to provide details of a PhD opportunity in the vet school of
Alfort (Paris, France).

Title: Effects of ground surfaces on the kinetics of the distal forelimb in
the jumping horse.

Supervisors: Pr Nathalie Crevier-Denoix and Dr Henry Chateau

The aim of this PhD is to investigate biomechanical stresses on the distal
forelimb of jumping horses in the field condition. For this purpose, special
devices adapted to the horse specificities have to be set up. Forces will be
measured with a home-made dynamometric horseshoe. The student will be asked
to solve methodological issues in order to adapt materials to the specific
and challenging analysis of equine biomechanics. This technological
challenge is coupled with socioeconomic issues. Elaboration of safer and
efficient training and competitive ground surfaces is a major goal for the
equine industry. This PhD project is part of a larger study in which ground
surfaces used for training and competition in race and sport horses are
evaluated in a purpose of certification. The implemented methods will be
used to compare the effects of different ground surfaces on the kinetics of
the distal forelimb in the jumping horse. The results will be used to define
criteria of safety and comfort of ground surfaces in sport horses.
The successful applicant will work closely with veterinarians and engineers
and is expected to become actively involved in academic publications.

SKILLS REQUIRED: Applications are welcome from applicants with a Master
degree in Mechanics, Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering.

* Experience in motion data collection and analysis.
* Experience in instrumentation, data collection and signal processing with
electronic components (e.g. force platforms).
* Experience in using spreadsheet and numerical computing environment and
programming language (e.g. Matlab).
