Medtronic is currently recruiting for a Computational Biomechanics
Research Engineer in the Spinal and Biologics business located in
Memphis, TN.


POSITION: Research Engineer, Computational Biomechanics

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for conducting multibody dynamics (MBD)
analysis of the human musculoskeletal system with a particular
application to the spine. A strong background in mechanical engineering
principles and experience using a multibody dynamics software package is
required. Excellent candidates will have experience with LifeMod or
MSC.ADAMS software, demonstrate dynamic communications skills, and
possess general knowledge of orthopedic biomechanics and musculoskeletal
anatomy. This position will actively participate in the product
development cycle and regularly interact with Product Development,
Regulatory, and Marketing groups.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct computational analyses (kinematics simulations) of the human
musculoskeletal system to characterize the biomechanical consequences of
various spinal pathologies, treatment modalities, and medical devices
and to ensure that implant designs meet their biomechanical performance
requirements.

Interact with leading surgeons and spinal research experts to elucidate
key biomechanical scenarios and input parameters for clinically-relevant
simulations.

Coordinate with internal research, development, and marketing staff to
identify scenarios to be analyzed, resolve details which are not
completely defined, determine the relevant mechanical issues, and plan
an effective analysis strategy.

Interface with product engineers, designers, and testing lab personnel
to assemble CAD models of the devices to be analyzed in the appropriate
biomechanical scenarios.

Prioritize workload and determine the appropriate level of computational
complexity required to answer the analysis questions.

Utilize engineering principles to analyze, verify, and interpret
completed work. Draw conclusions and provide product design advice from
results of analyses.

Report the results of simulation activities to highly knowledgeable
audiences in a variety of oral and written forms. Seek opportunities to
author technical publications and to present work in technical forums as
appropriate.

Produce impactful results under tight project schedules. Constantly
strive to enhance efficiency in procedures without a compromise in
quality.

Follow good modeling practices, record keeping, and documentation in
order to comply with internal company procedures, industry standards,
and external regulatory requirements.

Partner with biomechanical testing and product development personnel to
identify, develop, and validate new analysis methods which will
accelerate the product development cycle.

Provide training, technical support, and mentoring to new users of
multibody software tools.

Assist in the planning and implementation of new computing initiatives
and research studies.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering,
or a related field with at least two years of experience in
computational analysis of mechanical structures is required. Master's
degree with one year of experience is preferred.

A strong background in mechanical engineering principles, biomechanics,
and multibody dynamics is required. Hands-on experience using LifeMod,
AnyBody, SIMM, VIMS or an equivalent dynamic modeling software tool is
also required. Proficiency with MSC.ADAMS is strongly preferred.
Rigorous analysis methodology, applied research experience, project
management, problem solving, and good communication skills are
essential. Experience using commercial finite element analysis (FEA)
solvers or other simulation software would be beneficial.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

* Ability to build customer relationships and deliver high quality
results in a timely fashion
* Rigorous, independent problem solving abilities
* Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
* Experience in general biomedical engineering research
* Exposure to clinical orthopaedics
* Ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 20%)
