The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago
invites applications for Head of the Department of Bioengineering.
UIC, located just west of downtown, is the largest public research
university in the metropolitan Chicago area with a total annual
budget of $1.6 billion and research expenditures of $240 million. The
campus includes 15 colleges and schools, serving one of the nation's
most diverse student populations, with a total student body of
approximately 25,000 and a faculty and staff of 12,500. The College
of Engineering has 113 full-time faculty members, 1,700
undergraduates and 950 graduate students in six departments. The
College has a long tradition of working closely with the UIC College
of Medicine and other Health Sciences colleges, as well as four other
major academic medical centers in the Chicago area, to pursue
interdisciplinary research. The Chicago Technology Park provides
incubation support to promote future biotechnology companies and research.

The Department of Bioengineering, a campus leader in translational
bioengineering, has 13 full-time faculty and over 100 adjunct
faculty, with 210 undergraduate and 164 graduate students. While
Bioengineering has been a part of the University since 1965 and an
independent program since 1973, over the last 10 years 9 new faculty
have been recruited to the Department, with research expenditures now
exceeding $3 million/year. A graduate major in Bioinformatics was
established in 2003 and the Department plays an integral role in the
interdisciplinary Graduate College Life Science and Neuroscience
programs. The Department has existing strengths in the areas of
bioinformatics, cell and tissue engineering, neural engineering,
biomedical imaging, and biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering.
A new integrating theme of biomolecular engineering is under development.

For the position of Head, we seek a senior distinguished scholar with
an international reputation and an outstanding research record.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Bioengineering, or a closely
related field, evidence of leadership ability, a commitment to
excellence in teaching and a history of service to the field.
Candidates whose research interests complement, yet clearly extend,
existing research strengths are particularly encouraged to apply. In
addition to fostering excellence in teaching and research within the
department, the Head will be expected to build upon relations with
external research collaborators, as well as with alumni, and local
and national industry. Screening of applications will begin
immediately. The deadline for full consideration is January 15, 2009
although applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
The University of Illinois at Chicago is a major research university
with a strong commitment to serve its highly diverse community. As
such, UIC especially welcomes applications from women,
underrepresented minority group members, persons with disabilities,
members of sexual minority groups and others who would enrich the
University's research, teaching, and Great Cities' mission.

The University of Illinois at Chicago is an Affirmative Action/Equal
Opportunity employer.
