Postdoc position available:

Funding is available immediately for a postdoctoral fellowship to
investigate knee mechanics after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The
two modalities we are investigating are computed tomography (CT) and

Currently 10-25% of patients report anterior knee pain (AKP) after
TKA. Studying the patellofemoral mechanics (kinematics and contact
areas) of patients with and without AKP may reveal differences that
can be addressed through changes in implant design, surgical
technique, rehabilitation or patient selection.

Our goal is to develop a research tool to identify important
differences in mechanics and then a more widespread clinical tool for
patient screening and for tracking changes over time, building upon
our earlier research on patellofemoral mechanics and TKA. This work is
funded by a 3-year Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP)
grant, which is co-funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering
Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of
Health Research (CIHR). Salary will be commensurate with experience; a
top-up will be provided if the candidate has or obtains external
funding. The duration is one to three years.

A master's student is currently developing the CT protocol. Therefore,
it is expected that the postdoctoral fellow will focus on developing
the fluoroscopy tools as well as implementing the CT protocol
clinically. Another major focus of our research group relates to
computer-assisted surgery. If interested, the PDF may have the
opportunity to work in this area as well.

The research will take place at the University of Calgary, which has a
strong emphasis on Biomedical Engineering, with particular strengths
in Imaging and Bone & Joint research, and many existing collaborations
amongst Engineering, Medicine, Science and Kinesiology:
The research would involve direct collaboration with surgeons at
Foothills hospital.

Two of the highlights of Calgary (population, 1 million) are its
consistently sunny weather and its location next to the Rocky
Mountains, which has exceptional scenery and outdoor activities.

The preferred candidate will have a PhD in Engineering or Physics,
with experience in biomechanics and medical imaging, have an
established publication record, and be fluent in written and spoken
