This study is financially supported by industrial partner, a major firm in
imaging industry.

Quantitative evaluation of muscles using imaging techniques- applications to
clinical trials

Muscular weakness is observed in various pathologies associated with loss of
volume and/or fatty infiltration. Quantification of these data is essential
for diagnosis and follow-up of such patients. Evaluation is possible with
MRI but not available in routine and evaluation is based on visual analysis.

The aim of this Ph.D. position is to investigate quantitative analysis of
muscular volume and fatty infiltration from MRI. For this purpose, research
model software has been developed addressed to extract such data. However it
is necessary to adapt this software to the constraints of clinical use.
Furthermore, specific methodological issues concern application of this
quantitative analysis to patients with muscular diseases (such as
calpainopathy or Becker dystrophy) in order to correlate volumetric and
clinical data and quantify disease progression.

The successful applicant will work closely with engineers, biomechanical and
image processing researchers, computer scientists and radiologists, as well
as clinicians dedicated to muscular disease.

Research will be conducted in laboratory of biomechanics (LBM) and hospital
sites. On hospital site, the applicant will be in contact with both clinical
and MRI department to deploy application in clinic trial.

Qualifications and skills

Applications are welcome from applicants with a Master Degree in
biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering and Image analysis and a strong ability
for working in a pluridisciplinary team. Experience to program in C++, in
data collection and patient specific modelling will be appreciated.
