Position: Bioengineer (MS/PhD)

Organization: Department of Veterans Affairs, Bone & Joint
Rehabilitation R&D Center

Location: Palo Alto, California

Job Description
The VA Palo Alto Bone & Joint Center has a post-graduate position
available for a current US citizen to work on a 3-year VA-funded project
that combines imaging with theoretical and computational modeling in the
estimation of bone strength. The work will involve the following tasks:

1) The design and creation of testing fixtures
2) The operation of a servohydraulic system for bone strength testing
3) Imaging using microCT, peripheral CT and DXA scanners
4) 2D and 3D finite element modeling
5) Data analysis; verbal presentations; abstract and manuscript
preparation

Qualifications
A recently awarded advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Biomechanical
Engineering, Bioengineering or a related field is required. Experience
handling and mechanical testing of bones using an MTS or Instron system
is highly desired, as is experience with DXA or CT imaging and
computational modeling. Outstanding writing, speaking, and analytical
skills are required. The individual must be a self-starter and is
expected to be the primary person responsible for all aspects of the
project.

The Bone & Joint Center has strong ties to Stanford University. The
selected individual is expected to interact with Stanford graduate
students and post-doctoral fellows in a mentoring environment that
encourages periodic research presentations, the writing of conference
abstracts and manuscripts for journal submission.

THE POSITION IS OPEN ONLY TO INDIVIDUALS WITH CURRENT US CITIZENSHIP.
Individuals with permanent resident or resident alien (green card)
status, or anyone possessing any type of US visa are NOT eligible and

individuals who are familiar with their academic and research background.

The expected start date is on or before October 1, 2009. Salary depends
