A PhD studentship funded by ESRC-NDA is available at the Institute for
Biomedical Research into Human Movement and Health (IRM) in the Faculty of
Science and Engineering of the Manchester Metropolitan University

Biomechanical and visual constraints of stair negotiation

Falls, and fear of falling, are major factors affecting the mobility and
quality of life for the elderly and other frail populations, and it is
negotiating steps and stairs in the home, gardens, public spaces and on
public transport, where problems occur most frequently. This project will
investigate the role played by biomechanical and visual constraints in the
ability to safely negotiate stairs. Biomechanical and visual manipulations
will be studied and a number of measurement techniques will be applied to
identify the conditions that optimise safety. These techniques include
kinematic and kinetic analyses of body movement in combination with tracking
of eye movements during stair negotiation tasks of different musculoskeletal
and visual demands.

This project continues and expands on our previous research on stair
negotiation in the IRM at MMU. For further details please contact Costis
Maganaris (c.n.maganaris@mmu.ac.uk) or Bill Baltzopoulos
(V.Baltzopoulos@mmu.ac.uk). Students with experience in visual/motor control
in addition to biomechanical methods are particularly encouraged to apply.
