View Full Version : gastric muscle tone

Dear all,
I am a research scholar working on biomechanics of gastric muscles. I have a fundamental doubt regarding muscle tone.

My query is: whether gastric muscle tone is caused by nervous system, or interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), or both? Literature says clearly that spike potentials on top of the slow waves generated by ICC creates peristaltic movements (i.e. phasic contractions), but I have not found any clear cut information about whether slow waves are also responsible for fundic contraction (i.e. tonic contractions), or not. Even though it is mentioned in some literature that both phasic and tonic contractions are myogenic in origin (i.e. ICC is responsible).

Advanced thanks for your responses.
