Post-doctoral Research Fellow
School of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Exeter, UK

The School of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter is seeking to appoint a full-time post-doctoral research fellow in the field of sports biomechanics. The position is on an EPSRC-funded project investigating the traction performance and behaviour of materials and structures used in tennis shoes and surfaces. This new full-time post is available from 1 October 2009 on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2012.

This interdisciplinary study is in collaboration with the Sports Engineering Research Group, University of Sheffield and with the International Tennis Federation. We are seeking to recruit a researcher to perform biomechanical aspects of the project, working closely with a fellow researcher based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield. This project will identify the specific playing surface characteristics most influential on traction and develop predictive tools to inform the development for appropriate footwear-surface combinations.

Applicants will be expected to have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area of biomechanics and a demonstrated interest in sports shoes and surfaces. Desirable attributes include the ability to take initiative and to manage own workload as well as good communication skills. The post-holder will be based at the University of Exeter although travel to meetings in the UK with the project collaborators may be required.

Main duties and accountabilities to include:

- To collect, analyse and interpret biomechanical data for typical tennis movements,

- To collaborate with co-researchers in engineering in the development of mechanical test rigs for sports shoe and surface combinations,

- To collaborate with co-researchers in the development of simulation models for the investigation of shoe-surface interactions,

- To evaluate simulation results using biomechanical data.

- To disseminate project results at appropriate meetings, conferences, in peer-review journals and wider literature.

This job description summarises the main duties and accountabilities of the post and is not comprehensive: the post-holder may be required to undertake other duties of similar level and responsibility.

Salary: 24,152 per annum

Fixed term contract to 31 March 2012
