View Full Version : Summary of Replies: Deinterlacing Software

Dear all,

Very many thanks to everyone who took the time to suggest software that
can deinterlace videos and save to AVI at 50Hz. Despite the original
discussion I had with Dartfish, my post on Biomch-L prompted another
representative to show me that Dartfish was in fact capable of this.
Problem solved.

As can be seen below there are a number of options available (I have tried
to include only one suggestion/ link for each). The most popular freely
downloadable software seems to be VirtualDub (
http://www.virtualdub.org/index.html) and there's some useful information
on it at http://www.100fps.com/.

Apologies for the delay in posting this summary and thanks again,

David

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some software for getting my
digital videos off the camera and deinterlacing them. The main thing is
that I would like to save both fields to get 50 Hz video.

I've been using adobe premiere but this won't out put at 50 Hz. I've also
looked at looked at Dartfish and Silicon Coach digitiser, both of these
allow 50 Hz video but the videos cannot be saved to view as a separate
AVI.

Any advice is most appreciated!

SUMMARY OF REPLIES:

Hello.
Take a look at VirtualDub, it should do the trick (it did for me). You
can get a portable version (ie can be run from a USB-stick) at
http://portableapps.com/ or a "normal" version from
http://www.virtualdub.org/ (both versions are free!).
Good luck!

David,

You might want to take a look at ffmpeg. I don't know if it addresses
your problem specifically, but I have not yet run into a video conversion
problem that it hasn't been able to solve.

Good luck,

Hi David,

There is a software I've used before to de-interlace and change the
sample rate of video files, but it only runs on Mac (OS9 and OSX).
It's freeware and you can download it from
http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html#DEI

I hope this will help you,
Juan

Hello David

You've found the right place!

Our software has always deinterlaced and created a separate file as a
matter of course. have a look at our www.quintic.com > Downloads Menu for
our free multi-function Player (makes a great default Player); our Sample
Videos (the 50 Hz (fps) videos are standard video de-interlaced); and the
free Trial Software (use it with the Sample Videos).

It does a lot more than just deinterlace of course and is used in
Universities / Colleges / Schools all over the UK and worldwide (Spain,
USA, Oz, Japan, Sweden, WI, Netherlands, Middle East .....) as well as by
Sporting Organisations (ECB, MUFC, WICB, PCB, UKA, British Swimming,
British Diving, British Bob, .EIS, PGA, TPI ...) and NHS and Private
Clinics for gait analysis and not least by ourselves as an International
Biomechanics Consultants. It's our own use that leads to the software
being easy to use and relevant - it handles files from hard drive, HiDef,
DVD and web URL for complete flexibility.

We have 3 modular levels which are well described at
http://www.quintic.com/software/product_table.htm and
http://www.quintic.com/software/ with links to more specific info.

Importantly we have developed a free Quintic 4 Education package
http://www.quintic.com/quinac/education.htm - 200 Curriculum Sports videos
and a similar number of pages of questions (with suggested answers) up to
degree level in a format that is easy to cherry pick or copy /extend to
suit individual lesson plans / projects.

See our many Case Studies for a good idea of the capabilities and
possibilities with Quintic - http://www.quintic.com/quinac/education.htm.

Prices are:
Thanks for your email. Prices are:
Quintic 4 Education Sports is £195.00
Quintic 4 Education Coaching is £575.00
Quintic 4 Education Biomechanics 9.03 v.14 with automatic tracking and
digitisation is £2,500.
(+ VAT)
All programs are supported by XP and Vista.

We have substantial discounting if more than one Licence is required e.g.
5 Biomechanics Licences = £3,750.
Training and Maintenance are also available

Sorry I've gone on a bit from your original straightforward question but
if you have any more questions I'll be glad to assist.

Regards

Paul

Hi David,

I hope this information would be useful.
I record videos to 60hrz. I download them to the PC with Studio DV as an
avi file. By means of Ulead Studio Pro I split the video to bmp images.
Later with the Adobe Photoshop I separate each bmp file to de odd and the
even fields (deinterlace).

best wishes

Dear David Jessop
This is what our KineView software does. Also KineView has interactive
tools that allows you to measure lengths, positions, angles and time in
the a frame ot between frames.

For even more advanced use, you can add our completely wireless EMG, then
the product is called KinePro

Please have a look at www.kine.is and don't hesitate to be in contact.

Hi David!

I have recently written a short matlab 7.1 application which deinterlaces
25Hz digital
videos, displays them frame by frame and interpolates the missing lines
with a simple
algorithm. Furthermore the application allows manual tracking of points
and outputs
trajectories (in pixel-coordinates) as an Excel-File. (We use it for
teaching purposes).

The disadvantage: only uncompressed video-files can be processed (problems
with
softgrid-software.

In case you have anyone familiar with Matlab at hand, programming an
export-routine for
the avi-Files should not be too much of an effort.

In case you are interested just let me know I will send you the zipped
code.

Hi David,

We use Adobe Premiere Pro to export our PAL-format video to
de-interlaced AVI at 50Hz. I believe you mentioned already having that
software, so I am thinking you already have a workable tool. If you
don't find other suggestions you prefer, and if you like, I can send
you a synopsis of our routine for doing it - then you wouldn't have to
buy additional software.
