Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Orthopaedic Implant Design

Salary in the range: 30,360 to 38,730 per annum

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work on a 3-year project to conduct research into the design and development of human joint prostheses. The post will be based in the Medical Engineering Group of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Imperial College London, which has a long record of work in orthopaedic biomechanics, particularly development of joint prostheses.

The Research Associate will be involved in projects to design and develop orthopaedic implants, in particular including a hip prosthesis for use in osteoporosis and a knee prosthesis for use in revision of failed knee replacements. A particular emphasis will be the use of novel bioactive materials to enhance implant fixation to bone. This work will require a range of skills, including development of computer models and related finite element stress analyses, kinematic and structural testing, construction of test rigs, development of surgical instruments and procedures, and interaction with a wide range of disciplines, including orthopaedic surgeons, materials scientists and radiologists. There will also be opportunities for some work as a teaching associate within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) in orthopaedic biomechanics or related area and a first degree probably in Mechanical Engineering. In addition some background demonstrating multi-disciplinarity is desirable. Good written and oral communication skills are essential.
