Dear Colleagues,

Within and outside the CAMARC project (*), a discussion is ongoing on the
utility of net joint forces and moments as obtained from inverse dynamics
in a full 3-D context in combination with mass distribution data obtained
from regression models or via individual anthropometry via, e.g., medical
imaging (expensive, therefore not very practical when testing an individu-
al with FMA, i.e., Functional Movement Analysis such as `Gait Analysis').

Given the current lack of information on individual joint geometry, muscle
and ligament layout, etc., (especially in a pathological context), I would
be grateful for any ideas on the utility of net joint moments, net joint
forces, and mechanical power generated or lost at a joint, in a diagnostic,
treatment planning, pre/post surgery comparison, and/or long-term monito-
ring context.

Perhaps, this question might elicit another debate on the list as we had
a few months ago. Since the time (almost summer holiday) might be not so
practical, comments are welcome even at the start of the next (academic)
year. In the mean time, let me wish all of you a pleasant summer holiday;
I hope to see some of you at the upcoming meeting in Aarhus (Denmark) of
the European Society of Biomechanics. On Sunday July 7 in the afternoon,
there will be an informal meeting on joint kinematics in the wake of the
debate during February and March 1990 referred to above.

(*) CAMARC ("Computer Aided Movement Analysis in a Rehabilitation Context")

sion of the European Communities (AIM/DG XIII-F/CEC), with academic, public-
