PhD studentship

University of Glasgow AND Devro Medical Ltd

We are looking for a PhD student in an exciting interdisciplinary
project drawing on skills from the engineering and biomedical fields.
The project will introduce the student to the problems of developing a
novel composite material, through to mechanical and biological testing
and finally into a clinical application. The project will include in
vitro cell culture studies through to in vivo implantation. The
formulation of the composite will be optimised so that appropriate
mechanical properties are produced. Patterning of the films will
require engineering expertise, the cell culture and eventual
implantation work will require biological skills. Therefore during
this PhD the student will need to balance the engineering and
biological requirements of the eventual device, they will learn to
work both in academic and commercial environments and in a
multidisciplinary team. This will provide the student with an exciting
and timely training across disciplines and provide them with much
sought after skills in the rapidly developing field of biomedical

Due to the funding source this studentship is ONLY available to UK
residents as described in the EPSRC rules (www.epsrc.ac.uk). If you do
not fulfil the UK residency requirements, please note we cannot award
you this studentship.

For informal discussions please contact Stewart White (stewart.white@devro-casings.com
) or Prof Liz Tanner (e.tanner@eng.gla.ac.uk). To apply please submit
CV and letter of application along with names of two referees to
Professor Tanner.
