Two Graduate Research Assistant Positions in Tissue Biomechanics

Two NSF funded graduate research positions are currently available at
the Hard Tissue Biomechanics Laboratory, the University of Texas at San
Antonio, San Antonio, Texas. Both positions are funded by the National
Science Foundation (NSF) and are supported through either Biomedical
Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program.

One of the positions involves in research on nanomechanical
characterization of bone tissues using a nanoindentation system. This
project requires both computational simulation and experimental
measurement of in situ tissue behavior during nanoindentation and
nanoscratch processes. The aim of the project is to develop and validate
the novel test techniques to determine ultrastructural changes in bone.

The other is funded through a NSF research center and focuses on
multiscale modeling for prediction of bone fragility fractures. Model
visualization/construction, finite element simulation, probabilistic
failure analysis, and high speed computing are required for the project.
The uniqueness of this project is use of probabilistic approaches to
cope with uncertainties in the modeling processes.

The successful applicants should possess a Master's degree in Mechanical
Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely
related discipline with a genuine interest in bone tissue biomechanics.
Preliminary experience in computational simulation and Matlab
programming are advantageous. Applicants from underrepresented groups
are strongly encouraged to apply for the positions.

Applications should be made electronically to Prof. Xiaodu Wang
(xiaodu.wang@utsa.edu), including a complete CV, an essay detailing the
applicant's motivations, his or her previous experience, relevant
skills, and the contact information of two references.
