About the Research

Needle insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive clinical procedures. It is used for diagnosis, localized drug delivery, and tissue sample removal from tumors deep within the body. For effective medical diagnoses and treatments, the needle must reach its intended target. However, tissue inhomogeneity, organ deformation, and physiological processes cause the needle to deviate from its intended path. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of needles and improve clinical outcomes, patient-specific models of needle and soft tissue interaction would be ideal for pre-operative planning of medical interventions.

The goal of this research project is to develop patient-specific biomechanical organ model from magnetic resonance (MR) and ultrasound images. The models would capture both the anatomical details as well as the elasticity properties of tissue derived from strain imaging. The biomechanical models will be used for breast biopsies. The research will be conducted at the Control Engineering Group (http://www.ce.utwente.nl) at the University of Twente, though the applicant will be closely working with the Clinical Physics Laboratory (http://www.umcn.nl/Research/Departments/ClinicalPhysicsLaboratory/) and Department of Radiology (http://rdwww.extern.umcn.nl/) at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Netherlands.

Desired Skills

The successful applicant has completed a Ph.D. degree in mechanical, biomedical, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline. He or she should possess excellent skills and practical experience in one or more of the following research areas: solid mechanics, finite element modeling, image processing, and signal processing. Experience at the intersection of one or more of these areas are desirable. Experience with programming and using a commercial finite element analysis package is a plus. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.


This is a two-year post-doctoral position. This salary will be in scale 10 (Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities) and will depend on the relevant experience in this field of expertise. In addition to this, we offer a holiday allowance (amounts to 8%), an end-of-year bonus, various sporting and cultural facilities at reduced rate, medical insurance at a reduced rate.
