POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
Center for Magnetic Resonance in Biology and Medicine (CRMBM),University of the Mediterranean, Marseille, France

The Center for Magnetic Resonance in Biology and Medicine (Centre de Résonance Magnétique Biologique et Médicale: CRMBM), located at the University Hospital of la Timone in Marseille (Director: P.J. Cozzone) is seeking to appoint a full-time post-doctoral research fellow (36 months) starting September-October 2010. The position is in the "Muscle Group" headed by D. Bendahan. The CRMBM is located on the Campus of the Medical School in Marseille, adjacent to the University Hospital of la Timone, the largest medical facility in Southern Europe. It is jointly operated and funded by CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), University of the Mediterranean and the Public Hospital System of Marseille.

The research project is devoted to in vivo characterization of acute and chronic effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on muscle function. Experiments will be performed in healthy humans and muscle function will be studied strictly noninvasively using the CRMBM facilities i.e. a dedicated ergometer1 operating in both 1.5T and 3T Siemens MRI scanners. Several experiments are planned including muscle energy metabolism (using 31P-MRS), muscle performance, anatomy and physiology (using MRI). More particularly, we aim at investigating metabolic and anatomic changes resulting from NMES sessions and these changes will be compared to those occurring during voluntary contractions of the lower limb muscles. Such a basic research is essential for the understanding of underlying mechanisms associated with NMES and is the first step towards future projects focused on potential therapies.

Applicants must have a PhD in human movement science, physiology, kinesiology or a related discipline. Experience with the assessment of human performance or muscle function is highly desirable. Experience with MR techniques is appreciated but not a requirement. Salary is competitive and includes health insurance and complete social coverage.

Applicants should send a Statement of Research Interests, a Curriculum Vitae, and 3 reference letters to:
