IEEE BIOROB 2010 WORKSHOP (Full-day)
“Bridging Human Hand Research and the
Development of Robotic Technology for Hands”

Sept. 26, 2010 from 10am - 5pm
Tokyo, Japan
http://www.umaine.edu/mecheng/Deshpande_Lab/BioRobWorkshop/

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: JULY 7, 2010 (11:59pm, PST)

OVERVIEW
-----------------------------------
Robotic devices that imitate or interact with human hands are being
developed for a wide range of applications, including prosthetics, haptic
interactions and autonomous grasping and manipulation. The amazing
capabilities of the human hand result from its intricate biomechanical and
sensory structures, and from sophisticated neuromuscular control schemes.
Although modern artificial hand structures are becoming anthropomorphic, the
capabilities and control schemes for these structures are quite different
from those of the human hand.

The goals of this workshop are i) to distill the current state of knowledge
of hand biomechanics, sensory capabilities and neuromuscular control; ii) to
analyze how this knowledge can be used to improve the design and control of
devices that are worn by, interact with, or imitate the human hand; and iii)
to enable lively discussions on the design and control of robotic technology
for the hand.

TOPICS
-----------------------------------
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
- Models of hand biomechanics
- Sensory inputs (proprioceptive and exteroceptive)
- Neuromuscular control
- Mathematical methods to model grasping and manipulation
- Artificial control schemes for grasping and manipulation
- Robotic hand devices for therapy, prosthetics, haptic interaction, and
autonomous manipulation

WORKSHOP AND SUBMISSION DETAILS
-----------------------------------
The workshop is intended to facilitate productive interactions between
researchers from a variety of fields and will include technical
presentations by established researchers and a poster session. Accepted
abstracts will be published as part of the workshop proceedings and will be
assigned to podium or poster presentations according to scheduling
constraints. At least one author on each accepted abstract is expected to
attend the workshop and present results in person.
