« Non-invasive assessment of neuromuscular function: pathophysiologic insights
and clinical application »

A PhD position funded by the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis is offered in
the Laboratory of Human Motricity Education and Health (Faculty of Sport
Sciences, Laboratoire Motricité Humaine Education Santé LAMHES – URE 02, Nice,
FRANCE) and the Human Movement Science Programme (Faculty of Social Sciences and
Technology Management, Trondheim, NORWAY). The PhD position will be
co-supervised by Colson / Roeleveld. This position is open from September 2010
and is financed for three (3) years.

In Human movement sciences, it is of interest to be able to evaluate physiologic
and morphologic characteristics of muscles and their neural strategies. Surface
electromyography (sEMG) is a non-invasive technique which offers easy access to
physiological processes that cause the muscle to generate force. Recently,
different techniques based on multi-channel sEMG (i.e., mainly “High-Density”
sEMG) were developed (Stegeman et al., 2000). This equipment that records the
input of multiple electrodes placed on one muscle has increased the possibility
of detecting motor units (MUs) characteristics, which is generally obtained by
intramuscular needle EMG electrodes. Beside, its possibility to investigate MUs
properties in a large spatial area of a muscle multi-channel sEMG allows the
measure of MUs properties which are difficult to assess with invasive technology
(Zwarts and Stegeman, 2003; Karlsson et al., 2009). In addition to this
technique, analysis muscle reflexes (e.g., Hoffmann reflex) or electrically
induced potentials (e.g., V-wave) have gained popularity. Nowadays, these
techniques are often used to gain insight into neuromuscular physiology in
healthy subjects as well as diseases of muscle and nerve subjects with various
neuromuscular disorders (Barboi and Barkhaus, 2004; Drost et al., 2006).

The purposes of the present project are to:
(i) Validate these techniques in muscle and nerve diseases and provide
recommendations for HD-sEMG as a clinical diagnostic tool
(ii) Combine these techniques in different muscle and nerve diseases to improve
the knowledge about the neurophysiologic and morphologic muscle characteristics
during force and fatigue assessment. This will be compared with healthy muscles
and should help the clinician to propose therapy and/or a rehabilitation program.
(iii) Investigate with this methodology the acute and chronic effects of
rehabilitation programs on neuromuscular and functional performance as well as
quality of life.

Profile. The candidate must have a MSc degree with a background in sport
sciences, exercise physiology, neurophysiology, bioengineering and others are
encouraged to apply. She/he has to be highly motivated and autonomous. French
speaking is not a requirement.
Salary is attractive and in accordance with the scales set by the French government.
