Virtual Environment for Assessment and Rehabilitation Laboratory (VEAR Lab)

Applications are invited for a graduate research / teaching assistantship
for students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Kinesiology in the Virtual
Environment for Assessment and Rehabilitation Lab (VEAR Lab). This funded
position will assist with ongoing research related to the application of
nonlinear dynamics to the assessment and rehabilitation of locomotion in
clinical populations in both virtual and real-world environments. The
successful applicant will also aid in teaching courses in the Department of
Kinesiology. Individuals with a background in kinesiology, biomechanics,
motor control, biomedical engineering or related fields are invited to

Opening in Spring 2010, the VEAR Lab is a brand new, state of the art
laboratory for studying both overground and treadmill locomotion. The lab is
equipped with: 1) a high resolution, wide field of view head mounted display
to immerse subjects into virtual reality, 2) an ActiveStep treadmill to
induce perturbations in both virtual and real-world environments, and 3) an
eight camera motion capture system to evaluate kinematics in overground and
treadmill locomotion. Ongoing research includes: 1) documenting changes in
the complexity of locomotion kinematics following an ACL injury, 2)
examining the relation between gait complexity and adaptability and 3) the
development of immersive virtual environments for rehabilitation (including
the use of avatars) that can be used to create adaptive movement patterns in
clinical populations. The successful applicant will also work closely with
faculty members in the Applied Neuromechanics Research Laboratory (

Applicants should have experience in (or interest in learning) the
application of nonlinear dynamics in clinical populations to assess function
and enhance rehabilitation. Additionally, a successful applicant will blend
creativity with scientific rigor, as there are endless opportunities for the
use of virtual reality in rehabilitation. A bachelorís degree in a related
field is required; masterís degree preferred. Experience in computer
programming (Matlab, Python) is preferred, but not essential.
