*General Summary:*

The NeuroLocomotion Laboratory (SMPP) strives to understand the mechanisms
underlying recovery of walking after locomotor training in neurological
disorders. Seeks to investigate the reorganization of spinal and cortical
neuronal circuits of the human nervous system after intensive locomotor
training in spinal cord injury (SCI) and post-stroke.



The PostDoc Fellow will be responsible for the design, execution and
interpretation of experiments within a laboratory team environment and a
larger laboratory research program of engineers, physical therapists and
neuroscientists focused on sensory motor performance and rehabilitation
within a major, nationally leading Academic Rehabilitation Hospital.



The PostDoc Fellow will report to Dr. Maria Knikou and will require strong
skills in human electrophysiology (non-invasive techniques to study spinal
and cortical circuits including but not limited to electrical and magnetic
stimulation of peripheral nerves and motor cortex), electromyography, use of
as well as kinetic and kinematic measurements. Previous experience working
in a clinical setting or with human subjects is preferred. Training or a
demonstrable interest in neurorehabilitation and/or engineering is
considered a plus.

*Principal Responsibilities*

The candidate will participate in the discovery and evaluation of mechanisms
underlying recovery of walking through reorganization of neuronal circuits
at a spinal and cortical level following stroke and/or SCI . S/he may also
be expected to study the effects of various clinical interventions in order
to aid the design of rehabilitation strategies targeting specific spinal
reflex circuits.


Expectations:

Design, execution and interpretation of experiments for the
discovery of critical information in neural circuits electrophysiology as it
relates to the condition of-, or recovery from SCI and/or stroke.

Independent leadership of research projects in a team environment

*Reporting Relationships*

1. Reports directly to assigned Research Scientist or Principal
Investigator.

*Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required*

1. PhD degree in Neuroscience, Biological or Engineering Sciences with
an emphasis on Human Neurophysiology.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills

3. Less than 5 years of postdoctoral training

4. Proficiency in the use of current electrophysiology and/or nerve
conduction techniques and analyses, use of electromyography, kinematic
measurements including active range of motion, peak velocity, peak
acceleration, movement smoothness, and movement speed; and kinetic
parameters, including isometric voluntary contraction and clinical
measurements of motor impairment.

5. General knowledge or interest in rehabilitation and/or bio- or
mechanical engineering principles

6. Experience working with stroke, SCI or ALS subjects

7. Experience using or developing computer models is a plus

*Working Conditions*



1. Normal laboratory environment within a hospital setting with little
or no exposure to biohazard materials.
