Description of Position
The Department of Kinesiology is one of eight departments in the
College of Education and Human Services at SIUC. The department offers
degrees at the bachelorís level in physical education teacher
education, exercise science, and sport administration and at the
master's level in exercise science and sport studies. In addition to
the Chair, the department currently has 13 full-time faculty members
as well as four part-time faculty members. Faculty represent academic
specialties in cancer rehabilitation, dance, exercise physiology,
gerontology, motor learning, sport and exercise psychology, sport
management, sport sociology, and teacher education.
SIUC is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of
Teaching as a Research University/High Research Activity. SIUC enrolls
approximately 20,000 students and includes medical and law schools. It
is situated in a scenic region noted for its rivers, lakes and forest
preserves offering an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities
as well as social and cultural activities associated with a major
university. Carbondale itself has a population of 26,231 and is part
of the Carbondale-Marion-Herrin combined statistical area of 123,273
residents. It is located about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, 180
miles north of Memphis and 350 miles south of Chicago

Responsibilities of the Position
The person selected for this position will be the chief administrative
and fiscal officer of the department and will be responsible for
coordinating academic matters, research activity, faculty development,
service activities, and recruitment/retention efforts of the
department. The Chair will also develop and maintain partnerships with
outside agencies and area schools. In addition, the Chair will teach
courses and will be expected to continue a program of scholarship. The
Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Education and Human

Required Qualifications
1. An earned doctorate in Kinesiology or a related area is required.
2. Experience sufficient to qualify for the rank of Associate
Professor or Professor with tenure and graduate faculty status in the
Department of Kinesiology. A substantial record of scholarly
publications is required.
3. Demonstrated administrative and leadership qualities.

Appointment and Salary
Appointment for this position is on a 12-month, continuing basis.
Salary is commensurate with experience and background.
