PhD postion in HUMAN MOVEMENT SCIENCES
Project title: Are mechanical interactions between muscles functionally relevant?
Vacancy number: 1.2010.00331

Come and join the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences of VU university Amsterdam as a PhD student within the NWO funded VIDI project “Neuromechanical effects of muscle connectivity during locomotion”.

The Faculty of Human Movement Sciences provides scientific education and performs research in the field of human movement. Scientific research is conducted within the Research Institute MOVE (www.move.vu.nl) and covers both fundamental and applied research with a strong integrative signature. The primary aim of the research group “Musculoskeletal Biomechanics” is to increase understanding of the dynamics of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system in the light of its function as a system subserving functional movement.

Skeletal muscles are the actuators of human and animal movement. Contrasting traditional beliefs, recent results provided first evidence that muscles are not exclusively connected via tendons to bone, but are mechanically linked also to surrounding muscles. This challenges the concept of muscles as independent functional entities: are intermuscular connections a mere by-product of the musculoskeletal organization or are they functionally relevant? The aim of this PhD project is to assess the magnitude of mechanical interactions between muscles in conditions that simulate those present during normal movements. Transmission of forces between pairs of muscles will be measured at several locations within the body.

TASKS
The successful applicant will be appointed as a PhD student within the VIDI project entitled “Neuromechanical effects of muscle connectivity during locomotion”. You will design and conduct experiments, which will ultimately lead to a dissertation. Part of your work will be to contribute to the Faculty’s education program for 160 hours in the first and second year of the project.

REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for highly motivated and creative candidates with a MSc in Human Movement Sciences, Medical Biology or related fields with specific interest in skeletal muscle function. Preferentially, you have experience in animal (micro)surgery, experience in designing and performing experiments, experience in programming (e.g. MATLAB) as well as excellent writing and presentation skills in English.

FURTHER PARTICULARS
The initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months. After satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment it will be extended for a total duration of 4 years. You can find information about our excellent fringe benefits of employment at www.workingatvu.nl.

SALARY
