Department of Mechanical Engineering

The University of Texas at Austin

Renewable/Sustainable Energy and Intelligent Physical Systems

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at
Austin invites applicants for two (2) tenure-track Assistant Professor
positions. We seek candidates with an interest and expertise in the general
area of renewable/sustainable energy, including but not limited to energy
conversion technologies, solar energy, wind energy, biofuels, clean coal,
energy efficient structures, and energy storage. For this position, the
candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials
Engineering, or a related field. The Department also seeks to fill a second
position for candidates with an interest and expertise in the area of
intelligent physical systems, with application to biomechanical engineering,
haptics, medical devices and systems, tele-operated/semi-autonomous vehicles
and robotics, and underwater robotics. This candidate should have a Ph.D.
degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Both candidates should possess a balance of experimental and
theoretical/computational expertise. A particular strength of the Department
of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin is that it
encompasses a wide range of areas including Dynamic Systems and Controls,
Manufacturing and Design, Materials Engineering, Operations Research and
Industrial Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, and Thermal/Fluid Systems. We
expect the new energy faculty member will have a core expertise in the
Thermal Fluids Systems or Materials Engineering areas, while the new
intelligent physical systems faculty member will have a core expertise in
Dynamic Systems and Controls. Both new faculty will have abundant
opportunities to collaborate with faculty in other research areas, both
inside and outside the Department. The new faculty member will be expected
to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in his or her respective areas,
supervise graduate students, develop a strongly funded research program, and
be involved in service to the University and the profession.

Interested applicants should submit the following by email to
applications@austin.utexas.edu: (1) cover letter, (2) current vita, (3)
statement of research and teaching interests, (4) list of at least three
references. Energy candidates should address their electronic submission to
Professor David Bogard, Faculty Search Committee Chair. The Intelligent
Physical Systems candidates should address their submission to Professor
Raul Longoria, Faculty Search Committee Chair. Evaluation of applications
will begin November 15, 2010, although applications received by December 30,
2010, will receive full consideration. The successful candidate will be
required to complete an Employment Eligibility Verification form and provide
documents to verify identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. Further
