Faculty in Kinesiology in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University are seeking qualified doctoral students. Our research group focuses on Athletic Training, Neuromechanics, and Sports Injury Prevention. Faculty in our group utilize an integrated approach that combines biomechanics and motor control. Specifically, we are interested in how the nervous system and musculoskeletal system work together to produce human movement and the relationships between specific movement patterns and musculoskeletal health. We complement this instrumented laboratory work with sport safety inquiry, including evidence based practice, injury surveillance and epidemiology, and public policy. The goal of the program is to develop a holistic understanding of the biological and physical aspects of human movement in the greater context of public health. Students will also gain training and practical experience in the basic tools and methods needed to be successful in researching human movement, whether in clinical, occupational, or sport applications. Coursework may encompass biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, research methods, public health, psychosocial kinesiology, engineering, and the life sciences. Each studentís program of study is tailored to meet individual interests. Assistantships are competitive, based on studentsí strengths and experiences, include financial assistance, tuition and fee remission, and comprehensive health, vision, and dental care. Assistantships may be based on research and/or teaching within the College of Public Health and Human Sciences, including kinesiology courses, labs, and activity courses.

Faculty areas of interest include
Dr. Brown Crowell: sports-related lower extremity injuries, movement variability as it relates to injury occurrence, overuse and non-time-loss injuries.
Dr. Johnson: understanding underlying neural mechanisms for improving explosive muscle performance, particularly as it relates to injury prevention and athletic performance.
Dr. Norcross: lower extremity injury prevention, adoption and implementation of evidence-based best practices, injury surveillance.
Dr. Hoffman: neural mechanisms associated with female ACL injuries, integrating a population health approach into athletic training practice, the athletic trainerís role addressing the public health issues of asthma.

Applicants should have:
1. A mastersí (or DPT) degree in one of the following fields: kinesiology, biomechanics, athletic training, physical therapy, biomedical engineering, or other exercise science related field if applying to the PhD program. Students with a bachelorís degree may be considered for the PhD or MS degrees with appropriate qualifications.
2. Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills including basic computer skills.
3. Evidence of interest and experience in human subjects research.
