Dear Dr. Whalen:

Although research areas are not limited to biomechanics but appli-
ed to any scientific areas, in Japan we have a system for inter-
national cooperative studies, which is called Monbusho Interna-
tional Scientific Research Program: Joint Research, and supported
by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture
(Monbusho in Japanese), Japan. The program mainly supports
travel expenses and some expenses required to promote the coopera-
tive studies. Only Japanese scientists can apply for the pro-
gram, although they have to include several foreign scientists
from any countries in principle. The budget for each project is
usually 20,000 to 30,000 US$ for each year, and it continues for 2
to 3 years. The total budget in 1992 was 15 million US$, which
supported approximately 370 projects. The application should be
done in May each year.

If you need further information, please feel free to contact me
anytime.

Sincerely yours,

Kozaburo Hayashi,
