Dear Biomch-L readers,

Following my posting on advertising/sponsoring a few days ago, I received
some private queries as to whether there are any written guidelines on
these and related matters. While I have no current information for other
networks, there are some documents available by email for BITNET/CSNET
(recently reorganised into CREN - Corporation for Research and Educational
Networking, a non-profit organization in Washington DC, USA), and its
International Cooperating Networks or ICU's such as EARN and NETNORTH.

In essence, while commercial advertising is strictly forbidden, discussions
on products between users are encouraged, and vendors may respond to queries
-- which doesn't sound too singular. Also, commercial entities collaborating
with academic and similar non-profit research establishments may use the
network and even have direct connections on it as long as they respect its
non-profit character.

Those of you who wish to spend their time by reading these guidelines: just
send GET BOD32 90 to LISTSERV@UKACRL.BITNET in the U.K. and GET CREN NET_USE
to LISTSERV@BITNIC.BITNET in New York. Specific guidelines for the USA on
sending information to foreign destinations are available in the files LEGAL
GTDA, LEGAL COMMERCE, and LEGAL COUNSEL from the latter fileserver, which
also provides an index to useful networking information in NETINFO FILELIST.

Let's get back to really interesting things! HJW.
