View Full Version : Growing cells in collagen gels

Does anyone have experience with growing cells in collagen gels?

We are growing cells (specifically fibroblasts) in a collagen gel matrix,
using 1-2 mg collagen per ml M199 complete media + 10% FCS, at about 1
million cells/ml. The cells grow well in this system, which is similar
to what others have used via the literature.

What we need to know is, is there an optimum collagen concentration or cell
density for maximum initial gel hardness, and maximum cell proliferation and
matrix formation? We are interested in fibroblasts, chondrocytes and
fibrochondrocytes. Is this independent of cell type?

Thanks for the help.

Best regards,
