Applications are solicited from highly qualified individuals committed to
teaching and research in all areas relevant to aerospace engineering and
closely related complex engineering systems (transportation,
telecommunications, etc.). Appointments are planned for tenure track
assistant professorships. Appointment to a more senior position is possible
based on experience and accomplishment. Women and members of U.S. minority
groups under-represented at MIT are especially encouraged to apply.

The Department conducts a comprehensive program of undergraduate and
graduate instruction and has a broad range of research activities and
laboratories that involve students at all levels. Faculty of all ranks
engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching, curriculum development,
student advising, research, thesis supervision, and departmental and
Institute governance.

Areas of special interest at this time are:

Structures and Materials - Structural mechanics, engineered and advanced
materials, structural dynamics, aeroelasticity and controlled structures.

Instrumentation, Control and Estimation - Information systems and
management, control theory and applications, decision theory, automated
planning; guidance and dynamics of aerospace vehicles; aerospace sensors.

Human Factors and Automation - Human activity and protection in air and
space vehicles; pilot displays and workload; expert systems; flight
simulation, teleoperation and robotics; large software systems.

Aeronautical and Astronautical Systems - Aerospace information systems;
aircraft and space vehicle systems design.

Applicants must have a doctorate in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical
engineering, or a closely related field as well as a strong background in
their chosen discipline. Appointments initially will be for three years.
Applications should include a letter and two copies of the c.v. and should
sent to:
