Sponsored PhD studentship on Tennis Ball Dynamics

University of Sheffield, England

This 3 year studentship, leading to a PhD award, aims to study the dynamic
properties of tennis balls in relation to current knowledge. The work will
involve dynamic testing using high speed video and photographic techniques,
aerodynamics, and computational work.

Prospective students should hope to gain a 1st or 2.1 in Physics,
Engineering or a related subject. Students will be expected to carry out
field work, analytical and/or finite element analysis of the dynamic events
involved in tennis.

Students will receive an award of 8,000 GB pounds per annum tax free with
fees paid for. Additionally, there will be excellent prospects at the end
of the PhD for employment at the new ITF research facility in London.

The Department
This project will be carried out in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering at the University of Sheffield. The Department recently
received the highest research rating (5A) in the UK government Research
Assessment Exercise. Additionally, Sheffield has a high reputation in
sport, has excellent sporting facicilites and has one of the three bids
shortlisted for the UK Sports Academy Headquarters.
