Abstracts are requested for podium or poster presentations in relation to
the six different themes presented on the "announcement and call for
papers". The deadline for abstract submission is December 1st, 1991
(postmarked). The scientific committee will give its decision on the
acceptance of the abstracts by January 15th, 1992. Authors of accepted
abstracts should send a complete paper (4 to 8 pages) by March 1st, 1992.
The proceedings of the Symposium will include the full papers and will be
available during the Symposium, published by an official editor.

The Symposium will be held at the Hotel Meridien, downtown Montreal, close
to "la Place des Arts" and the new "Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal".
1992 coincides with the celebrations of the 350th anniversary of the
foundation of Montreal. The Symposium occurs between Saint-Jean Baptiste
day (Quebec day, June 24th) and Canada day (July 1st) and also during the
International Jazz Festival.


The "International Symposium on the Three-Dimensional (3-D) Scoliotic
Deformities" will be a scientific and technical forum allowing the
opportunity for all researchers and clinicians, working in this field, to
exchange knowledge, to establish contact between investigators and to
generate further communication and discussion specifically on the 3-D
aspect of the scoliotic spine and thorax.

The symposium will be divided in six main themes; each theme will be
introduced and discussed by an invited keynote speaker who has a specific

1) 3-D acquisition, reconstruction and modelling techniques: capture and
treatment of radiographic images, evaluation of magnetic nuclear
resonance techniques and/or axial tomography, external measurements
(3-D digitization, goniometers, etc.), presentation, analysis,
validation and discussion of various reconstruction and modelling
techniques of the 3-D shape of the spine, rib cage, back surface
topography, etc. Keynote speaker: DR. BURKHARD DRERUP (GERMANY)

2) 3-D biomechanical analysis: application of the finite element
modelling methods, kinematic analysis of the scoliotic trunk,
mechanical evaluation of spinal and rib cage forces and deformations,
mechanical interaction between spine and rib cage, model validation,
etc. Keynote speaker: DR. ALBERT B. SCHULTZ (USA)

3) 3-D deformity measurement methods and terminology: comparison of
different measurement indices for the severity of the spinal
deformity, for the rib cage asymmetries, for the back surface shape,
definition of new indices, new measurement techniques, etc.

4) 3-D etiological and prognostic aspects: clinical studies on
etiological, epidemiological and/or progression factors related to the
3-D aspect of scoliotic deformities, hypothesis verifications, 3-D
interpretation, prognostic factors, etc.

5) 3-D treatment of scoliosis: clinical evaluation and analysis of non-
invasive treatment (braces, electrical stimulation, etc.) and surgical
treatment in relation with 3-D scoliotic deformities.

6) Surface topography vs internal 3-D spinal and/or trunk anatomy:
Relationships between back shape topography and spine and/or rib cage
geometry, clinical studies, effectiveness of external landmarks or
markers, determination of the vertebral line, etc.

Round tables will allow, in a form of controversial debates, discussion on
particular subjects related to each theme of the symposium.

Debate 2 - "Is finite element modelling too complex to be of clinical

Debate 3 - "Should scoliosis curve types be reclassified using 3-D

Debate 4 - "Is idiopathic scoliosis caused by a mechanical sagittal
imbalance or by a nervous system disorder?"

Debate 5 - "Is derotation of the spine the main objective of treatment?"

The fee for the Symposium is 420 $ prior April 1st, 1992 and 480 $
afterwards. The registration fee includes: meeting material, one copy of
the proceedings, welcoming reception, two lunches, banquet, refreshments
and another special social activity. The fee is due upon acceptance of
paper. All cancellation received by April 1st, 1992 will be assessed a
100 $ non refundable charge. After this date, there will be NO REFUNDS.

The official languages of the symposium are English and French.
Simultaneous translation will be available.

The proceedings of the symposium will be published by an official editor.
