Following John Wann's suggestion, I can only wholeheartedly support his
recommendation that interesting replies to "Calls for Help" are made available
to the subscribers. Apart from debates and announcements, it is the "Call for
Help" capacity of a fast and informal medium like Biomch-L that makes this
medium particularly attractive. Quite often, individual subscribers are
approached privately for help, but it may be much more efficient to initiate
Help Requests as a public posting.

Whether replies are posted directly onto a list or first sent to the original
source of the question is a matter of some discretion. If a reply seems suffi-
ciently important to warrant direct posting, this is, of course, most desira-
ble. Alternatively, replies might be sent to the original requestor, who
hopefully will compact them and post a summary conclusion, for the benefit of
all readers -- possibly, with a statement that further information is avail-
able upon request. In particular cases, such information might also be stored
in the Biomch-L database for shorter or longer time periods, to be retrieved
via the standard SEND/GET command to the LISTSERVer. Just ask your Biomch-L
moderators to do this for you.

Experts are present not only in your own institution, but all over the world!
