Dear Biomch-L readers,

Some time ago, mention was made of email access through AT&T's CompuServe
and similar, public-access facilities. One other, apparently moderately
priced facility is PSILINK from PSI in Reston, Va/USA. For further
details, just send an empty email message to psilink-info@psi.com, and
summary information plus pointers to additional material will be returned
to you. At present, PSI would seem to operate in the USA only. One clear
advantage is that there are local telephone entry points in many areas, so
long-distance telephone charges can be avoided. The software can be down-
loaded via anonymous ftp and used on a PC with Hayes-compatible modem.

Such communication facilities seem particularly useful for groups and
individuals that are not intimately affiliated with nearby universities
and similar research institutions that have standard CREN/BITNET and/or
Internet connections.

One hopes that Europe 1993 will see similar endeavours; at present, the
various national PTT organisations do not seem highly interested to im-
prove the international telecommunications structure, despite efforts
from the European Commission. Only with an efficient and reliable tele-
communications structure, PSILink-type initiatives will become viable in
this part of the world.
