The Brockton/West Roxbury VA Medical Center and the Partners
HealthCare, Inc. seek well-qualified applicants with a background in
orthopedic biomechanics for a research faculty position. Associated with
this position is an academic appointment in Orthopedic Surgery
(Biomechanics) at Harvard Medical School at the Assistant Professor level
and an appointment as Co-Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering R&D
Laboratory. The applicant should have the capability of directing an
independent program in musculoskeletal research and an interest in
collaborating in multidisciplinary projects with other laboratory
investigators and orthopedic surgeon faculty. There will be opportunities
to participate in teaching and to act as research adviser to medical
students, graduate students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows.

Areas of interest in biomechanics include:
-design and evaluation of joint replacement prostheses;
-experimental studies of the mechanical properties of
implant-tissue interfaces;

Areas of technical expertise include:
-finite element analysis
-mechanical testing

The Rehabilitation Engineering R&D Laboratory and Orthopedic
Research Laboratory comprise biomedical and engineering resources for the
investigation of musculoskeletal problems. The laboratory research staff
includes 6 principal investigators. The facilities occupy over 10,000 sq.
ft. at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and the West Roxbury VA Medical
Center. Projects include a) the elucidation of mechanisms underlying bone
and cartilage formation and degradation, and certain musculoskeletal
disorders, b) development and evaluation of implants for orthopedic
procedures, and c) tissue engineering.
