Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship Opportunities
The Pennsylvania State University

The Center for Locomotion Studies (CELOS) at The Pennsylvania State
University invites applications for graduate assistantships to support
predoctoral study in the field of Kinesiology beginning in the Fall of
1998. Applications are encouraged from individuals with M.S. degrees in
any related Science or Engineering discipline. The assistantships will pay
a stipend and provide full tuition support. Dissertation projects are
expected to be developed in conjunction with one of several ongoing CELOS
studies involving the biomechanics of lower extremity movement and
CELOS is an interdisciplinary research center in the College of
Health and Human Development. Faculty at the beginning of 1998-9 academic
year will include Drs. Peter Cavanagh, Jan Ulbrecht, Neil Sharkey, and
Stephen Piazza. Faculty associates from a number of other Departments and
Colleges also participate in CELOS research activities. Current research
projects include studies of: 1) Stair descent by the elderly (supported by
the National Institute on Aging. 2) Foot mechanics using a unique cadaver
model (supported by the Whitaker Foundation). 3) Exercise countermeasures
for bone loss during space flight (supported by NASA). 4) Foot structure
and somatosensory function in the elderly and in neuropathic diabetic
patients (NIA and The American Diabetes Association). 5) The effect of
loading exercise on bone density among adolescent girls (supported by
NICHD). 6) Direct dynamics simulations of human movements. Penn State
also supports two Diabetes Foot Clinics under the direction of Drs.
Ulbrecht and Cavanagh, and these facilitates provide an excellent setting
for clinically oriented investigations.
