Post-doctoral Position Available:
Control of Posture and Movement
Using Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation
__________________________________________________ ____

Location: Neural Control Laboratory
Center for Biomedical Engineering
University of Kentucky
Lexington, KY 40506-0070

Lab Director: James J. Abbas, Ph.D.

Research area:
Design/evaluation of adaptive controllers for
Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation (FNS) systems:
computer simulation studies
experiments on human subjects

Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or related field

Research in the Neural Control Laboratory is directed at the design and
evaluation of FNS systems to restore control of posture and movement to
individuals with neuromotor disorders such as spinal cord injury. The
Neural Control Laboratory is equipped with facilities for computer
simulation and experimental studies. The Laboratory is currently
involved in research projects funded by The National Institutes of
Health , The Whitaker Foundation, The Kentucky Spinal Cord & Head Injury
Trust and The University of Kentucky.

The post-doctoral scholar will work with Dr. Abbas and the research team
to develop and evaluate adaptive control schemes for use with FNS
systems. This work addresses the need to customize stimulation patterns
for individual users as well as to adjust stimulation to account for
fatigue. The research work will utilize computer simulation studies as
well as experiments on human subjects. Applicants should have research
interests and skills in the areas of rehabilitation engineering, neural
systems, adaptive control systems, neural networks and/or biomechanics.
