GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT OPENINGS

The Tissue Mechanics Lab in the Department of Bioengineering, University
of Pittsburgh, has immediate openings for two Ph.D.-level graduate
research assistants in the area of bioprosthetic heart valve (BHV)
tissue structural and mechanical analyses. The projects include:
1 - Microstructural and mechanical analyses of BHV explanted after
in-vivo use in humans.
2 - The study of the fatigue damage behavior of biologically derived
chemically treated tissues used in BHV fabrication.
A strong interest in tissue mechanics, structure, and composition is
required. Good experimental skills, ability to design and fabricate
testing devices are also a plus. In addition to experimental skills,
both projects will include computational modeling of BHV tissues. Thus,
candidates with a background with FEM modeling will also be considered.
For both projects, a 12 month stipend with full tuition waiver is
included. Students with a Master's degree and/or relevant work
experience are preferred.

"The science of mechanics is the noblest and above all others the most
useful, seeing that by means of it all animated bodies which have
movements perform all their action."
