NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity

The Pennsylvania State University
Center for Locomotion Studies

The Center for Locomotion Studies at Penn State University (CELOS) invites
applications for a postdoctoral fellowship under the direction of Dr. Peter
Cavanagh. The position will support a flight experiment funded by the
National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA).

Applications are encouraged from individuals with strong backgrounds in
lower-extremity biomechanics and bone biology to support a NASA-contracted
flight experiment to be conducted on the International Space Station by two
flight crews scheduled for launch in January and May of the year 2001. This
project will compare lower extremity loading, movement, and muscle activity
in 0-G and 1-G in an effort to identify differences that may be key
contributors to bone loss during space flight.

CELOS is an interdisciplinary research center in the College of Health and
Human Development with a diverse funding base that includes NASA, the
National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, and various biomedical foundations and organizations. Other
current research projects include studies of: 1) stair descent by the
elderly, 2) foot structure and somatosensory function in neuropathic
diabetic patients, 3) the effect of loading exercise on bone density among
adolescents, and 4) locomotor mechanisms using cadaveric and computer
modeling. Penn State also supports two diabetes foot clinics that provide
settings for more clinically oriented investigations.

Interested applicants are invited to send a letter of interest, curriculum
vitae, and contact information for three references to Dr. Lorraine
Mulfinger, 29 Recreation Building, Penn State University, University Park,
PA 16802; phone: 814-863-8552; email: lxm14@psu.edu. This position is
funded by an awarded NASA contract that currently extends until April 30,
2002. The successful candidate will be appointed on an annual basis at a
rate commensurate with other federally-funded postdoctoral appointees
(http://ohrm.niddk.nih.gov/stipends/NIHStipends.html ). Preferential
consideration will be given to applicants expressing employment interest and
availability for the full term of the project. CELOS will begin to review
applications immediately and will continue to consider all applications
until a successful applicant is found. CELOS reserves the right to reject
any or all applicants. Penn State is an affirmative action/equal
opportunity employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
